Canadian food labelling can be complex, But TAG Canada has the expertise to ensure you are in compliance with all regulations — old and new!
With former CFIA senior officials and Canada-based experts on our team, we understand the intricacies of Canadian food labelling requirements and how these apply to different products.
TAG Canada can help in determining the labelling requirements for your specific products, assess your current compliance with domestic or imported products, and liaise with CFIA on your behalf.
With all prepackaged foods requiring a label that includes 13 core elements – from bilingual wording to list of ingredients, clear allergen declaration, and nutrition facts table – along with additional requirements for certain products, TAG Canada can review your products and labels to ensure full compliance and determine any exemptions under which you may fall.
Front-of-Package regulations now require that any prepackaged food that meets or exceeds 15% Daily Value (DV) for saturated fat, sugars, or sodium carry a “high in” nutrition symbol on the front of the package. TAG can assist in your DV determination to keep you in compliance.
Imported foods must follow all Health Canada and CFIA regulations, along with labelling requirements specific to imports. TAG can help determine the labelling required for your imported products and can assist with other import requirements as well.
CFIA is actively reviewing labels and taking enforcement actions when a food product is deemed to be mislabelled. While TAG Canada can work with you to avoid such actions, we are also here to assist and liaise with CFIA on your behalf should your labelling be found to be out of compliance.
If you export food to the US, it is critical to understand the FDA and USDA food labeling requirements. While some are similar to those of Canada, there are enough differences that the assistance of TAG cross-border experts can help keep you on the right side of the law.
